It Makes Sense That You're Stuck

Your Essential Oils Aren't Just Making Things Smell Nice.

You are standing in your kitchen and everything feels like a bit much. Maybe the laundry is piled up or your inbox is overflowing or you just got another bill that made your stomach do a little flip. You feel that familiar tightness in your chest, and instead of doing the next obvious thing, you just stop. Or maybe you suddenly decide the garage really does need organizing right now. Either way, that's a protection pattern. Your nervous system has decided that the best way to keep you safe in this moment is to shut things down or send you somewhere else entirely. So you reach for that bottle of essential oil you heard about on social media, half wondering if it actually does anything or if you are just paying for fancy smelling water. I want to tell you it is doing a lot more than you think.
Maybe you thought essential oils were for when you were already calm. The spa version. The end of a long bath, or finally settling onto a meditation cushion after the kids are in bed. I see it differently. Essential oils for anxiety and stress are not the prize at the finish line. They are the ladder you use to get out of the hole when you feel stuck. When your nervous system is on high alert, you cannot just think your way into a better mood. Your brain is busy scanning for threats and it does not care about your positive affirmations. It cares about safety. Essential oils act as a direct line to the part of your brain that handles emotion and safety, before your thinking brain even gets a chance to weigh in.
Here is why that matters. When you inhale a scent, it takes a more direct route to the emotional center of your brain than almost anything else you can do. That is not wellness marketing, that is just how the brain is wired. It is why a certain smell can drop you straight into a memory, or shift your state faster than a thought can. And it is why reaching for an oil when you feel your chest tighten is not a small thing. You are giving your nervous system a physical signal that it is safe to settle, before you have said a single word to yourself about it.
And while we are here, let's talk about why you might have tried an oil before and felt like it did nothing for you. We often hear that lavender is for calm, which makes sense given how often it shows up in every wellness post and spa product on the market. But it is not a one-size-fits-all rule. Every nervous system is unique. For some people, lavender might actually feel irritating or even slightly activating if they have a negative association with it or if their body just does not respond well to that specific chemical profile. If an oil does not work for you, it does not mean you are doing it wrong or that aromatherapy is a lie. It might just mean it is the wrong oil for your specific nervous system at this moment. This is why I focus on personalized support to find what actually makes your body feel safe, rather than handing everyone the same three oils and calling it done.
This is also why I combine oils with other nervous system tools in my work, but that is a whole other post.
It is worth mentioning that quality matters here. Not all oils are created equal, and many of the bottles you find at the grocery store are filled with synthetic fragrances or fillers that do not have the same effect on the nervous system as pure, high-quality extracts. If you want the physiological benefit, you need the real thing. You also want to use them safely. If you are applying an oil to your skin, always dilute it first with a carrier oil like jojoba or sweet almond. Your skin is an organ and it deserves to be treated with the same care you are trying to give the rest of yourself.
So here is something simple you can actually do with this. Find one oil or blend that feels grounding to you and make it your go-to cue. Not for after the storm has passed. For the moment right before you walk into it. Maybe you are about to open your laptop, check your bank account, or walk into a conversation you have been dreading, and you can already feel your body bracing. That is exactly the moment. Using it there creates a tiny gap between the trigger and your reaction, and in that gap you have options you did not have before.
This is not about forcing yourself through the hard parts until you are exhausted. It is about building a relationship with your nervous system so that it begins to trust you. When you reach for an oil in a hard moment, you are not just smelling something nice. You are telling your body that you hear the alarm, and you are taking a step to help it feel secure. That is the kind of thing that adds up quietly over time, until one day you notice that the tightness in your chest does not arrive quite as fast as it used to.
What is one scent that always makes you feel like you can finally take a full, deep breath? Tell me in the comments

Catherine Robinson works with women who are smart, capable, and stuck in ways that confuse them, because they already know better. Her work focuses on the nervous system patterns underneath procrastination, money blocks, and visibility fear: not as character flaws to overcome, but as protection patterns that made sense once and just haven't updated yet. She uses EFT tapping, nervous system tools, and a lot of plain, direct conversation to help women finally close the gap between knowing and doing.
